Having these ready keeps your visit short and avoids a second trip:

• Your driver license or a state-issued photo ID.
• A complete list of your current medications, including dosages and the provider who prescribed them.
• Glasses or contact lenses if you wear them, and hearing aids if you use them.
• Your current medical examiner certificate if you are renewing.
• Records or a note from your treating provider if you manage an ongoing condition. Bringing this to the first visit is the single best way to avoid delays.

A CDL physical follows the examination format the FMCSA sets out, so it covers the same ground wherever you take it:

• A health history form you fill out and then review with the examiner.
• Vision and hearing checks.
• Blood pressure and pulse.
• A urine sample taken as part of the physical. This checks for indicators such as protein and sugar, and is a separate step from DOT drug testing.
• A hands-on physical examination.

Most exams are finished in 20 to 30 minutes. Adding a DOT drug test to the same visit takes a little longer, and booking both together saves you a second appointment.

When a driver meets the federal standards, the medical examiner certificate is issued the same day, so you leave with your card rather than waiting on a follow-up visit.

Sometimes the examiner needs more information from your treating provider before the certification can be completed, or issues a certificate covering a shorter period so a condition can be monitored. Both are routine parts of the process. Whether any particular driver is certified, and for how long, depends on the examination itself and on the federal standards that apply, so it is not something that can be settled in advance of your visit. If you have questions about your own situation, bring them to the exam.

Once you have your card, give a copy to your employer. If you hold a Florida CLP or CDL, you no longer send the paper certificate to the state yourself — since December 15, 2025 your result transmits electronically from the FMCSA National Registry to FLHSMV and posts to your driving record, and that electronic record is the official proof of your certification. Non-CDL DOT drivers still receive and carry a paper certificate, and a driver certified under an FMCSA variance carries that variance documentation while operating.
